Renault brings back the Duster for a new era, blending rugged SUV DNA with bold design, premium interiors and hybrid-ready powertrains to take on India’s fiercely competitive mid-size SUV segment

Renault has officially pulled the wraps off the all-new, India-spec 2026 Duster, marking the return of one of the most influential SUVs in the country. The unveiling itself was a statement, held at Chennai’s JN Stadium in front of an audience exceeding 15,000 people, making it one of the largest auto unveil events seen in recent years. Pre-bookings for the new Duster are now open at Rs 21,000, with prices scheduled to be announced in March 2026. Early customers will benefit from priority delivery, special introductory pricing and exclusive ‘Gang of Duster’ merchandise.
Exteriors & styling
At first glance, the new-generation Duster looks like a radical departure from its predecessor, yet it retains the tough, functional DNA that made the original so popular. The exterior design is sharper and more contemporary, highlighted by rectangular LED headlamps with integrated DRLs and bold Duster lettering on the grille. Faux skid plates at both ends, chunky black cladding, functional-looking air vents on the front bumper and squared-off wheel arches reinforce its SUV credentials. At the rear, C-shaped LED taillights connected by a slim LED light bar add a modern touch. Renault is offering six colour options, including Jade Mountain Green, River Blue and Sunset Red, along with dual-tone variants for added visual appeal.
Interiors
Step inside and the transformation is even more dramatic. The cabin has been completely redesigned to match current expectations in the mid-size SUV segment. A new three-spoke steering wheel with piano black accents sits ahead of a dual-screen layout that combines the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. Ambient lighting, faux carbon fibre trim on the dashboard and doors, and dual-tone upholstery elevate the premium feel. Feature highlights include a panoramic sunroof, electronic parking brake with auto-hold, Type-C charging ports and dual-zone climate control. Renault has clearly pushed the Duster upmarket, with additions such as powered front seats, a powered tailgate, 60:40 split rear seats, an Arkamys audio system, a 360-degree camera, six airbags and Level 2 ADAS.
Engine & transmission options
Under the bonnet, the new Duster takes a completely different approach compared to the diesel-heavy strategy of the past. Renault will offer three petrol-based powertrains at launch. The entry-level option is a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine producing around 100bhp and 160Nm, paired exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox. Sitting above it is the more powerful 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine, generating roughly 160bhp and 280Nm, available with either a six-speed manual or a dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The headline powertrain, however, is the new 1.8-litre E-Tech hybrid. This setup combines a petrol engine running on the Atkinson cycle with two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery pack. Producing around 160bhp, the hybrid system can operate in pure electric, petrol or combined modes, with regenerative braking helping improve efficiency. Renault has confirmed that this hybrid variant will arrive closer to the festive season later in 2026, positioning it as the flagship offering.
Dimension & boot capacity
In terms of size, the new Duster has grown to better suit modern buyer expectations. Measuring around 4.3 metres in length with a 2.65-metre wheelbase, it promises improved interior space. Boot capacity stands at a generous 518 litres, expanding to nearly 1,800 litres with the rear seats folded, making it practical for both city use and long road trips.
Final words
The return of the Duster also reflects how dramatically India’s SUV market has evolved. When the original launched in 2012, SUVs made up a small fraction of passenger vehicle sales. Today, they dominate the market. The new Duster is no longer about creating a segment but about staying relevant in one of the most fiercely contested spaces. Its success will hinge on pricing, which Renault is expected to keep aggressive, potentially starting below Rs 11 lakh. If priced right, the 2026 Duster could once again become a benchmark, blending rugged appeal with modern technology for Indian buyers.
