The Corporation of the City of Panaji owned and managed garbage treatment plant behind the Heera petrol pump near the Kadamba bus-stand was gutted in a fire that broke out in the wee hours of Monday morning.

CCP incurred loss in the fire as a JCB trademark earth moving machine, treatment machinery and garage crates were burnt.

CCP officials suspect foul play behind the incident as surprisingly the security personnel placed there on duty were absent when the fire broke out. After the fire incident was reported at around 6.30 am, the fire services personnel used seven fire tenders and managed to control the blaze after almost three hours of fire-fighting.

Fortunately, there were no casualties.

The cause of the fire, however is yet to be ascertained. CCP Mayor Uday Madkaikar visited the spot.

“At 6.30 we got to know that there is was a fire. The security guard which was provided to CCP by the government was not present at the location when the incident occurred. If he had reported about the fire on time the damage would have been minimised,” Madkaikar said, adding that the police will investigate the case.

CCP commissioner Sanjith Rodrigues informed that CCP has lost some machinery in the fire.

“We don’t know what the exact cause of the fire is. The security was not at his place past midnight and we are investigating whether there is any connivance with persons involved in the fire,” Rodrigues added.

Rodrigues also said that the agency which was handling garbage at the site was not up to the mark and the arrangement will be reviewed.
