Maina Sports Club edged past Margao Sports Club 4-3 to storm into the quarter-finals of the Velim Panchayat Cup football tournament, organised by Sports and Welfare Club of Zaino, Velim, at Church ground, Velim on Monday.
In a pulsating encounter, the teams displayed attacking brand of soccer. Roque Borges broke the deadlock with a stiff grounder for Margao Sports Club in the 9th minute.
Stung by the setback, Maina Sports Club regrouped quickly and took the fight to the rival camp. Three minutes later, Cliff Barbosa cancelled the lead with a snap shot. Stunned by the equaliser, Margao Sports Club went into the attacking mode, and in the 31st minute, Joel Colaco regained the lead with
a stiff shot.
Post resumption, Maina Sports Club brought in fresh legs and it paid the dividends as Clive Colaco cancelled the lead in the 38th minute. Unfazed, Margao Sports Club upped the ante and in the 38th minute Joel Colaco’s curler crashed into the net. Maina Sports Club intensified their attacks and Cliff Barbosa neutralised the lead as he scored his brace.
With the time running out, Maina Sports Club went all out and Milagres Fernandes’ blistering shot crashed into the net.
