Reis Magos: Three likely to be elected unopposed

In two wards of Reis Magos Panchayat, one nomination each has been received ensuring that the candidates would be elected unopposed, as a record 1,207 candidates filed their nominations for the 33 panchayats in Bardez.

MAPUSA:
The nominations for the panchayats elections began on May 18 and ended on Thursday even as Wednesday’s High Court order de-reserving some wards has created uncertainty on filing of nominations in those wards.
Virendra Shirodkar’s nomination was the only nomination received from Ward 7 in Reis Magos, while Siya Nagvekar was the only candidate to file her nomination from Ward 8 of the same panchayat.
Interestingly, in Ward X of Reis Magos, Kedar Naik is also expected to be elected unopposed as the only other nomination received is of his mother Naina Naik, who is expected to withdraw her papers in favour of her son.
The highest number of candidates to file nominations is from the 11-member panchayat of Anjuna (76) followed by Tivim (54) and Calangute (53).
The lowest number of candidates is from the 5-member Nadora Panchayat (15).
In another development, a candidate from Salvador-do-Mundo armed with a High Court order filed his nomination from Ward 3 which was earlier reserved for women.
“Govind Vithurai Nagvekar got an order from the court declaring Ward 3 as general and filed his nomination from the ward,” informed Returning Officer I, Dashrath Gawas.
Deputy Sarpanch, Reena Fernandes is the only other candidate who has filed her nomination from the same ward.
The scrutiny of nominations will take place on Friday and Saturday.
