Dempo Sports Club registered a 4-2 win over Santa Cruz Sports Club Cavelossim in the Goa Professional League, organised by GFA, at Duler stadium under floodlights, here on Monday.

After the win, Dempo have 44 points from 19 matches, while Cavelossim stayed on 16 points from 22 matches. The loss confirmed Cavelossim’s demotion to the First Division.

Though the match started at 7.30 pm, the late kick-off attracted just 15 paid spectators for the interesting match, played under floodlights. Cavelossim colts fighting to avoid relegation did have number of scoring opportunities, yet their strikers failed to convert. In the 27th minute, Samson Simoes shot weakly into Dempo keeper Agnelo Gomes’ hands off a free kick, while in the 37th minute, a header from an unmarked Allwyn Vaz was collected by the Dempo keeper.

At the other end, title aspirants Dempo, after missing a number of scoring chances, went into the breather leading by a 2-0 margin, with Velito Cruz (4th minute) and Kapil Hoble (41st minute) scoring. In the 4th minute, Velito Cruz chipped the ball over the keeper off a pass from Beevan D’Mello.

Cavelossim keeper Razak Devsor time and again came to his team’s rescue as he twice blocked strikes from close from Desmond Pereira and later from Kapil Hoble and Naveen Mendes. In the 41st minute, the Golden Eagles extended their lead when Desmond Pereira sent a low cross at the goal to an unmarked Kapil Hoble, who tapped the ball into the

goal, 2-0.

On resumption of play, Cavelossim caught the Dempo defence napping and scored twice, in the 52nd minute through their defender Nevile Fernandes and then through Samson Simoes in the 67th minute. Earlier the Golden Eagles had scored in the 54th minute through Beevan D’Mello, who guided his header off Nickson Castanha, into the goal, 3-2.

On crossing over, Cavelossim colts who came with renewed ideas pulled a goal back as Samson Simoes sent a cross to well positioned defender Nevile Fernandes who drilled a low shot past rival keeper Agnelo Gomes into the far corner of the goal, 2-1. Just two minutes later and Golden Eagles further increased their score as Beevan D’Mello directed his header off Nickson Castanha’s cross into the goal, 3-1.

However in the 67th minute Cavelossim caught the rival defence on the wrong foot as Allwyn Vaz sent a perfect cross to Samson Simoes, who this time made no mistake as he tapped the ball home, 3-2. Dempo’s hunger for goals did not end as in the 84th minute Velito Cruz, who had opened the account, scored his brace as he curled his shot from top of the penalty box past keeper Devsor, 4-2.
