Second half fireworks as Churchill maul Salgaocar 6-1 in Pro League

Churchill Brothers FC pumped in five second half goals past Salgaocar FC for a stunning 6-1 win in a GFA Professional League match at Rosary Ground, Navelim on Saturday. Churchill Brothers led 1-0 at the break.  

Uttam Rai and Clencio Pinto scored a brace apiece as the Red Machines blew away the Greens for a tennis scoreline. Salgaocar started the proceedings on an attacking note and Rowllin Almeida along with Macroy Peixoto controlled the ball and created chances. Salgaocar had an early opportuntiy when striker Ronaldo Olveira was put on the platter by midfielder Macroy but the former could not put the ball past rival goalkeeper 

Kunzang Bhutia. 

Salgaocar again came close but striker Ronaldo muffed a sitter after be being put through by midfielder Rowlin in the 15th minute.  

With Churchill Brothers overcoming their shaky start and controlling the tempo, they broke the deadlock in the 30th minute when defender Nickson Castana’s well executed free kick beat Salgaocar goalkeeper S Rajani Kumar. Salgaocar retaliated but Sanson Pereira’s feeble shot from close did not trouble the rival goalkeeper.  

Changing over, Churchill Brothers upped the tempo and in the 54th minute, substitute Clencio Pinto punted the ball home after a well measured pass from Umesh Harijan, 2-0. Eight minutes later, Churchill third goal came and it was almost cinematic. Manipuri striker Uttam Rai cuts past a rival defender while receiving a Clencio Pinto cross and placed the ball to the far corner of the net. Two minutes later, Clencio inflated their tally, 4-0. 

Salgaocar FC scored the consolation goal through the boots of striker Devendra Murgaonkar in the 78th minute. Stunned by the reducer, Churchill attacked more and in the 78th minute, midfielder Gilbert Olveira made the most of a rival defender’s lapse and pushed the ball into the net. In the stoppage time, Uttam Rai and substitute Chester Paul Lyngdoh combined for the sixth goal and the former scored from a rebound relayed to him by Chester to complete his brace.  

In another Pro League match at Corps of Signals ground, Navelim, Dempo SC defeated Corps of Signals 2-1. All the goals came in 

the first half.

Dempo showed their intent early and Bevan D’Mello put them in the lead in the 6th minute. Kritikesh Gadekar doubled the lead for the Golden Eagles in the 26th minute. Stung by the double blow, Corps of Signals raised their pace and two minutes later, Pawan Kumar Thakur reduced the margin. Dempo held on to the one-goal lead to emerge victorious.
