Tivim to start door-to-door waste collection from June 1

In order to tackle the growing garbage menace in the village, the Tivim panchayat has decided to start door-to-door collection of wet and dry garbage on daily basis from June 1 onwards.

Sarpanch Sunita Salgaonkar informed the gram sabha that the panchayat will start the door-to-door garbage collection on experimental basis for a period of one month.

“With limited resources in our hand, we are embarking on this drive to arrest the garbage nuisance in the village. We would like the people of Tivim to extend their cooperation in this endeavour,” Salgaonkar said.

Tivim has been facing the problem of garbage menace as waste was found being dumped at several spots along the State highway.

According to the sarpanch the door-to-door garbage collection drive will be reviewed after one month and depending on the situation it may be collected on alternate days instead of daily.

The panchayat has held talks with the authorities of the Saligao garbage treatment plant and the sorted waste will be sent to the treatment plant.

The village panchayat will have a task on its hand as it has not provided any garbage bins to sort out wet and dry garbage at source to individual homes.

A local, Josephine Pinto said locals should be made aware of treating wet garbage by composting it within its compound.

“Since most village houses have space in their backyard small composting pits could be dug in the backyard to treat wet waste,” Pinto suggested.

Another local and social worker, Robert Colaco suggested that henceforward if any projects of more than 10 flats apply for licence in the village, the panchayat should ensure that these project proponents set up a separate treatment plant to treat waste within its compound. Opposing construction project in survey nos 152/4 and 152/6, some villagers questioned the panchayat how it went ahead and issued licenses to those projects.

The sarpanch and the secretary informed that the panchayat could not stop issuing NOC to the project since the Town and Country Planning and other departments had already issued permission for the project.

Locals demand setting up of p’yat website

MAPUSA: The Tivim gram sabha unanimously decided to set up a website for the panchayat and to also organise activities in the panchayat to celebrate the United Nations decade of Family Farming 2019-2028.

A local, Josephine Pinto said that setting up a panchayat website will give boost to e-governance in the village.

“Our country is marching ahead in the field of Information Technology and our children are already in the world of digital marketing and online banking. It is time the village panchyat of Tivim also moves in this direction and set up a website,” Pinto said.

The gram sabha gave a nod to the proposal and unanimously passed a resolution to set up a panchayat website for Tivim.

It was decided that the website should host names, postal address, email ID and contact numbers of panchayat members, village committees and the panchayat staff.

It was also suggested that details of important officials and elected representatives and web links of key departments may also be added in the website.

A villager, Apolonia Pereira said that the panchayat should appoint a sub-committee to plan, organise activities and co-ordinate the same with various government departments and agencies on the occasion of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming 2019-2028.

“The UN event will provide opportunities for small farms and farmers. Educational institutions , SHGs and community organisations in the village along with the VDC of Tivim can work together to organize programmes and activities during the decade,” Pereira said.

It was resolved to write to various government departments to help in organizing such activities during the decade.
