Chow(gule) Bella…

Chowgule College has always been the institution that was the platform and voice of its people–its students. From their 50th Anniversary onwards, however, their rights have been curbed. The pupils speak out about what they love and their pet hates

From a small makeshift campus in Aquem, to being one of themost sought after campuses in the state, Chowgule College has come a long way.Known as an institution that caters to what the students believe in, thiscentre was popular as a place for people to speak up and express their views.

The canteen has seen various shifts over the years. From amakeshift underground labyrinth, to sharing a part of a congested and dubioussmelling gym, to its current status of being one of the best places to eat oncampus in Goa. However, the system employed today is not cool by a long shot.Students can only buy food by using their id-cards, and if the scanner does notwork, rumbling tummies it is. But when it does, the food is superb (by allcollege standards, of course).

One major upside is that students get one day a week off.No. Not just your average Sunday, but every Wednesday as well. The studentshave to turn up on campus and attend a class or two, but after that, they arefree to do whatever they like. All day! Most of the time is spent playing futsal, where the college has its own league. Players from teams transfer back andforth, and every team is uni-sex. Go girl power!

College canteen jam sessions used to be all the rage, echoing the era of the 1980’s that saw Ravi Coutinho strumming away at what usedto be the basketball court. With a clash between musicians and management, these have now stopped, much to the disdain of music lovers and on campus bandsalike, who believe that rock and roll must go on.

Petty problems or not though, campus pride is evident, andwill prevail. Goals will be achieved, and on the futsal court: scored.Musicians will hit all the right notes, as will academics. The students believethat they will prevail, against all odds, and shine through.
