Former chief secretary Dr Jose Conceicao Almeida passed away in a private hospital at Miramar on Tuesday evening following a brief illness. He was 87.
Dr J C Almeida had served in several key positions during his long service as an administrator under Goa's first chief minister Dayanand Bandodkar and many other chief ministers.
Shortly after his return from Lisbon as part of the Portuguese bureaucracy, Dr Almeida had set up the directorate of statistics and later went on to manage the rural bank ‘Caixa de Economica de Goa'.
After having cleared the UPSC exams, Dr Almeida was assigned to different government posts in different parts of the country. He then returned to the State and went on to become state's development commissioner, before he was named as CS in 1979, a post he served for about a year.
Dr Almeida is survived by his wife Dulcina and children, Genevieve, Jose, Otilia, Orfelinda, Anibal and Ondine.
