The Goa Crime Branch arrested nine persons during a raid on an alleged gambling den at Honda in Sattari in the early hours of Tuesday, seizing cash and gambling-related materials from the spot.
Crime Branch SP Jivba Dalvi said the raid was carried out based on specific and reliable information about illegal gambling activities operating in the area.
He said the premises were allegedly run by the main accused, Surya Gaonkar (40), a resident of Honda.
The remaining accused were reportedly present to participate in the gambling activities.
The others arrested have been identified as Rajaram Gawade (61) of Pisurlem; Gopal Gaonkar (43) and Dinesh Naik (40), both from Saleli; and Gundu Gaonkar (51), Manohar Gaonkar (62), Ramesh Chari (54), Pandurang Gaonkar (50), and Sunil Godyalkar (24), all residents of Honda in Sattari.
Except for one accused aged 24, all the others are above 40 years. “All the accused were found engaged in card gambling, locally known as ‘Andhar Bahar’,” Dalvi said.
During the operation, police seized cash amounting to Rs 52,300 along with other gambling articles from the premises and the possession of the accused.
A case has been registered under Sections 3 and 4 of the Public Gambling Act.
