Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardesai who is on the receiving end of Remo Fernandes latest song which pokes fun at the misuse of the term Goenkarponn, took on Fernandes to call him a ‘cynical bhatkar’

“There is a lot of cynicism about Goa. I would like to speak about one... Remo has come up with one song… they say has taunted this Goenkarponn... What it says is, he is now leaving Goa, why because it is not the same Goa he lived in. This is cynicism and a very pessimistic way of looking at life,” Vijai said.

“Whatever the environmental impact of mining, tourism, or over development may have been, we cannot say that Goa is a lost cause. We can enact regulations, we can ourselves change systems and try to preserve Goa,” Vijai added.

“So Remo is completely wrong. In other words, for some person who is poor, who wants an occupation, a profession to leave his state and go out in search of a job is okay, but Remo is not in that position. He is well to do. He is a bhatkar. Now a bhatkar is leaving Goa and he is saying this is the way forward? Is this not cynicism. Is this not pessimism?” Vijai asked.

He pointed to initiatives to preserve Goenkarponn including TDR policy to say that he is preserving Goanness.

“First time in the history of the country, such regulations (TDR) are being seen thought of in Goa, I think Goa is not lost,” Sardesai said.

Remo, who Vijai referred to as an “illustrious Goenkar” has written a song which evokes nostalgia of the good old days in Goa and seeks to bring out, that the govt is not doing anything to preserve what is left of Goa.
