With Anjuna gaining notoriety of reporting most cases of drug overdose, Goa Police has created a WhatsApp group of restaurant and pub owners in Anjuna who can drop a message if anyone is found consuming drugs and police will take action on the suspects.

Stating that police can arrest any person who has consumed drugs, Mapusa SDPO Jivba Dalvi requested the restaurant owners to report to the police if they find any suspects doing drugs and assured to protect the identity of the restaurant owners.

“We can do a blood test of the person who has consumed drugs and if it comes positive, we can book a case for consumption,” Dalvi said.

The Mapusa SDPO along with Anjuna Police Inspector Prashal Desai held a meeting with the restaurant and pub owners along the Anjuna coastal belt and impressed upon them to provide information to police.

Incidentally, the efforts of Goa Police to take the restaurant owners into confidence has come when the owner of Curlies and another popular nightclub in Anjuna have been recently arrested by Hyderabad Police for allegedly peddling drugs.

At the meeting, the police provided the restaurant owners with boards/posters with various phone numbers so that they can relay information to the police.

“Alternatively, they (restaurant owners) can dial 112 if they find anyone has consumed drugs and the police will then act,” the SDPO said.

Dalvi further informed that he has taken a lot of initiatives to educate college students about the ill-effects of drugs and the fresh move to meet the restaurant owners was yet another move to control the menace of drugs.

“Now, the restaurant and pub owners will be the eyes and ears of the police. We appealed to them to inform us and leave the rest to us. We have opened a WhatsApp group of the restaurant owners so that they can immediately relay information to us,” he said.
