Five persons from West Bengal were arrested by Calangute police on charges of duping foreign citizens by operating a fake call centre in Baga.
According to reports, police busted an illegal call centre operating at Sauntawado-Baga on Thursday between 7.20 pm and 8 pm. Police caught five persons red-handed while operating the fake call centre by impersonating computer service providers to foreign citizens and inducing them to pay fees for their services through different types of gift cards by using an app ‘portSIP UC’ on the pretext of providing easy services.
The accused then fraudulently withdrew this amount for their personal gain, police said.
The accused have been identified as Abhishek Puri (27), Md. Farid Habibullah (28), S K Amir Alam (38), Guddu Shaw (29) and Ajoygir Giri (19), all from West Bengal.
Calangute police arrested the accused late Thursday night under Sections 11(2)(b), 319(2), 318(4) r/w Sec. 3(5) of BNS and Section 66D of the IT Act. Further investigations are in progress.
