The Ministry of Power has approved nine transmission schemes worth ₹22,540 crore, as recommended by the National Committee on Transmission. Four of these schemes pertain to Renewable Energy Zones (REZs) in Gujarat, with a revised cost of ₹10,225 crore, stated Shripad Naik, Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy.

Naik informed the Rajya Sabha that under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), 20.33 crore smart meters have been sanctioned till June 2025, of which 2.27 crore have been installed. In total, 3.46 crore smart meters have been installed under various schemes as of June 30, 2025. The RDSS, with an outlay of ₹3,03,758 crore and budgetary support of ₹97,631 crore, aims to complete installations by March 2028.

Loss-reduction works worth ₹1.51 lakh crore have also been sanctioned under RDSS. These include upgradation of substations, transformers, conductors, and segregation of mixed-load feeders.

Naik emphasised that fund release under RDSS is linked to states’ performance on key financial and operational parameters, such as timely subsidy payments, filing tariff petitions, and reducing AT&C losses—bringing accountability and discipline to power distribution utilities.
