Justice Surya Kant’s swearing-in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India marks another landmark in the Indian judicial system. The new CJI is the focal point - not only for his leadership abilities but also for the fact that there are tough challenges awaiting, with subjects such as constitutional rights, civil liberties, and holding the governments accountable raging continuously.
At present, the top court is bombarded with over a mammoth 90,000 pending cases, and the pile is growing, endangering the very concept of timely justice. The massive case load not only delays justice but also lowers the public trust in the judicial system, which in turn makes the problems of reform and efficiency very urgent and without any escape route.
