The Goan Association North West (GANW) will host its inaugural Christmas event on December 17, as part of efforts to bring the Goan community together for a joyous celebration of Christmas traditions.
The event, which is a fully sold-out show, not only aims to unite the Goan people but also serves as a platform to showcase the rich tapestry of Goa's Christmas traditions.
The atmosphere will complement the soulful melodies of Treble Maker's duo Kirsten and Lewis Mendonca, who have journeyed from London to grace the occasion with live music.
Santa's arrival will add a touch of magic to the festivities, captivating both young and old alike.
The venue will be abuzz with laughter and camaraderie as attendees engage in traditional games, fostering connections and creating new friendships.
Central to Goan Christmas celebrations is the exchange of sweets, a tradition upheld with great enthusiasm.
Recognising the challenges faced by families in finding time to prepare these traditional treats, a home business at the event has offered a convenient solution, allowing attendees to purchase these delectable delights.
One prominent figure in the GANW community, Melanie Antao Fernandes, the association's President and a resident of Warrington in the North West, shares her commitment to preserving Goan traditions.
Melanie expresses, "I have always made traditional Goan sweets to share with family and friends. It's a tradition that I hope my boys will continue in their lives."
She reflects on the evolving tastes of the younger generation. Still, she believes in the power of food as a memory, confident that they will come to appreciate and crave these cherished traditions over time.
Amid the festivities, gift-giving emerges as a delightful addition, particularly bringing joy to the younger attendees. The children are thrilled with this new tradition. Santa’s visit will also be a highlight of the event.
“My heart is filled with excitement and the season's spirit, as December 17 marks a significant milestone for GANW. It is evident that GANW's Christmas event is more than just a celebration; it's a testament to the resilience of tradition, the warmth of community, and the enduring spirit of Christmas. With each shared sweet, joyful laugh and festive tune, the Goan community in the North West comes together to create memories that will be cherished for years to come,” added Melanie.
ASSOCIATION
The Goan Association North West’s founding committee includes Strip Cardoso, Cefona Gracias, Thomas Alphonso, Louie Pereira, and Melanie Antao Fernandes.
GANW President Melanie Antao Fernandes said the region lacked a Goan association for a long time and the formation of the association in April has filled a void to bring the community together to celebrate its culture.
“We plan many more events to keep the community connected and engaged,” said Melanie.
“Interestingly, two of our founding members, Louie and Thomas, are young adults, which is so encouraging. We want to engage with Millennials and Gen Z and keep them close to our Goan heritage and culture.”
Melanie described the Goan Association North West as a community organisation dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and promoting Goan culture in the North West of England.
“Through various events and activities, we strive to create a strong sense of belonging among the Goan diaspora while fostering relationships with the broader community,” she said.
“We know we are on the right track and will continue to serve the Goan community,” added Melanie.
