Goans in Karachi mark silver jubilee of World Goa Day

KARACHI

Karachi’s Goan community came together in jubilant celebration on October 11, to mark the Silver Anniversary of World Goa Day.

The event was hosted by Goinkars Own Academy (G.O.A.) at the scenic grounds of St Patrick’s Cathedral. The evening was a heartfelt tribute to Goan heritage, music, and unity.

The event commenced with a warm welcome address by G.O.A. President Peter Mendes, who reflected on the journey of the local Goan community and its enduring spirit.

The highlight of the evening was the online presence of Rene Barreto, Founder of the World Goa Day organisation. Barreto shared the inspiring story of how the association began in 2000 with just three members in Panaji-Goa and has since blossomed into a global network connecting Goans across continents.

Fr Benjamin Shahzad, Parish Priest of St Patrick’s Cathedral, also addressed the gathering, offering blessings and acknowledging the cultural richness which the Goans bring to Karachi’s diverse tapestry.

The entertainment segment showcased the vibrant artistry of Karachi’s Goans. Young star Dylan Fernandes opened with ‘Tum Mojem Sukh’, setting a soulful tone. Bella Coelho and Clifford Lucas energised the crowd with a ‘The Mog’ mash-up, followed by an instrumental duet by Hillary Rodrigues and Clifford Lucas.

Duane Fernandes, another rising star, charmed the audience with ‘Rosalina’, while Hillary and Bella returned for a romantic ‘Love Medley’. Samantha Rodrigues and her troupe lit up the stage with a graceful dance performance celebrating Goan rhythm and tradition.

All performers were honoured with certificates and gift hampers in appreciation of their contributions. Lucky draws added excitement, with attendees winning delightful surprises throughout the night.

One of the most electrifying moments of the evening came from across the digital divide—a virtual performance by the dynamic duo Tammy & Roy from Goa. Though miles away, their music brought the crowd to their feet, proving that distance is no barrier when it comes to celebrating the Goan spirit.

Known for their infectious energy and deep love for Goan music, Tammy & Roy curated a set blending nostalgic classics with modern rhythms. From timeless Konkani hits to upbeat remixes, their performance had something for everyone. The audience swayed, sang along and danced with joy as if the performers were right there on stage.

Their virtual presence was a testament to the global reach of World Goa Day and the power of music to unite hearts. As Goan tunes echoed through the night, Tammy & Roy reminded everyone that the Goan identity is vibrant, borderless, and always ready to party.

No Goan celebration is complete without its signature cuisine. Guests were treated to a sumptuous dinner featuring Sorpotel, Sannas, Chicken Caldine, Pulao and a delectable dessert bringing the authentic flavours of Goa to Karachi.

The evening concluded with a vote of thanks by MC Aloysious Soares, who praised the community’s unity and the tireless efforts of the organisers.

The silver anniversary of World Goa Day in Karachi was not just a celebration it was a reaffirmation of identity, culture, and the enduring bond among Goans worldwide.
