More than half the number of jobs generated at the greenfield Manohar International Airport at Mopa so far have been cornered by local Goans, according to information furnished by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to the Goa legislative assembly.

Thus far, 1,727 Goans are employed by the GMR group which is the concessionaire operating the new airport while the State has spent Rs 200.14 crore on it over the last nine years, Sawant's written reply to multiple questions tabled by AAP MLA, Venzy Viegas and RGP MLA, Viresh Borkar said.

In total, some 3,299 persons have got jobs at the Mopa airport of which 1,727 are Goans and 1,572 are not of Goan origin.

Sawant also said, that of the 1,727 Goans employed, 1,241 are on GMR's roster and their jobs are 'permanent' and the balance 486 are on contractual basis.

To another query tabled by Viegas as to how much the State has invested so far on the Mopa and Dabolim airports and how much revenue it has earned in each case, Sawant said the State Government will begin accruing revenue from the Mopa airport from May 31, 2024.

As per the concession agreement, 36.99% of the gross revenue of Mopa airport is due to the State from May 31 next year, he added.

As for the Dabolim airport, it does not come under the jurisdiction of the Goa government and therefore the question of revenue accruing to the State government does not arise, Sawant's reply said, adding that no cost there is also borne by the State.
