In a significant step towards preserving and promoting Goa’s rich cultural heritage, the Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) has constituted a Task Force Committee to pursue UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) recognition for Tiatr, the state’s iconic theatre form.

Tiatr, a distinctive blend of music, drama, and sharp social commentary, holds a central place in Goa’s cultural identity. It plays a key role in preserving the Konkani language and addressing contemporary social issues through performance.

The newly formed Task Force will be headed by the Minister for Art and Culture. Other key members include Anthony Barbosa, President of TAG; Marcos Gonsalves, Vice President of TAG; and Sagun Velip, Director of the Directorate of Art and Culture.

Joining them are prominent personalities from the Tiatr community and academia, including Tomazinho Cardozo, Prof Prakash Vazrikar, Frederick Noronha, Wilson Mazarello, Antonio Rosario Fernandes (Roseferns), Fausto V Da Costa, Agnelo Fernandes (Borim), Michael Gracias, Fr Luis Gomes, William Fernandes, Fr Doel Dias, Fr. Milton Rodrigues, Vikas Kandolkar and Carlos Fernandes, Member Secretary, TAG.

Cultural scholar Dr Nandakumar Kamat has been appointed as an advisor to the Task Force, bringing his expertise in heritage preservation to the initiative.

“The formation of this committee is a crucial milestone in our efforts to protect and promote Tiatr globally,” said TAG President Anthony Barbosa. “UNESCO recognition will help ensure this art form continues to thrive and inspire future generations.”

The committee convened for its first official meeting on June 17 in Panjim, where preliminary plans were discussed to begin preparing the necessary documentation for UNESCO submission.

UNESCO’s recognition under the Intangible Cultural Heritage list is expected to bring greater awareness, support, and preservation of Tiatr both in Goa and on the international stage.
