An autopsy on Tuesday revealed that a 58-year-old social worker from Bordem-Bicholim murdered his 14-year-old son before committing suicide at their residence in Naik Nagar, Bordem on Monday.
According to Bicholim police, the body of Sanjay Mhapsekar (58), a native of Pinguli in Kudal-Maharashtra was found lying on the floor, while his son Sanchit (14) was found dead on the bed, respectively, in a supine position.
A forensic team, dog squad, and fingerprint experts examined the scene and collected evidence. Initially, the case was registered as an unnatural death. At the crime scene, police said a note left by Sanjay was recovered which revealed that the relationship between him and his son was indecorous over issues related to studies, curriculum, behaviour, etc.
They said Sanjay was reportedly upset and under the impression that the violent and unacceptable behaviour of his son may pose a danger to him and his daughter’s future, and as such, may have taken the drastic step to kill his son. From the scene, police suspected that Sanjay might have killed his son and eventually committed suicide by consuming a toxic substance inside his house.
On Tuesday, Dr Pannag S Kumar, Assistant Professor of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, GMC, Bambolim, conducted a post-mortem examination of the body of Sanchit and certified the cause of death as “Asphyxia as a result of manual strangulation (throttling) which was fatal in the ordinary course of nature.”
Dr Kumar also conducted a post-mortem examination of the body of Sanjay and certified the cause of death as “Asphyxia as a result of Cerebral and pulmonary oedema and congestion consequent to consumption of a poisonous/ toxic substance.”
Based on the medical reports, suicide note, and circumstantial evidence, police concluded that Sanjay had strangulated his son, Sanchit, to death in their house sometime before 6.45 pm on Monday, before ending his own life by consuming a poisonous/toxic substance.
A case has been registered at Bicholim Police Station under relevant provisions of law, including charges related to murder and offences under the Goa Children Act.
