Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticised the Congress party for questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s austerity measures and urged opposition parties to support the Centre’s efforts amid the escalating conflict in West Asia.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, BJP spokesperson Yatish Naik alleged that the Congress was attempting to mislead the public by politicising measures intended for economic stability and public welfare. “The austerity measures are part of pro-people governance and Prime Minister Modi has urged citizens to adopt them responsibly. Unfortunately, the Opposition is trying to politicise the issue,” Naik said.
He stated that the ongoing conflict in West Asia had pushed crude oil prices close to 100 US dollars per barrel, affecting not only fuel prices but also the cost of essential commodities. Despite the global uncertainty, Naik claimed the Centre had managed to maintain stability in the country.
Naik also referred to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, stating that Singh too had appealed to citizens to avoid buying gold. “Even former PM Manmohan Singh had made similar appeals during the economic challenges faced in 2013. Congress should not selectively criticise PM Modi,” Naik said.
Calling the austerity measures a matter of national interest, the BJP leaders appealed to the Congress and other opposition parties to support the Centre instead of criticising its decisions during a period of global instability.
