Calls to ensure State cashew produce gets adequate protection

MARGAO
Chairman of the Goa Marketing Board Prakash Velip on Wednesday lamented that cashew kernel is being sold in the market as authentic cashew produce.

Velip has said the Union Agriculture Ministry should ensure that cashew produced in the country gets adequate protection in order to protect the interest of the farmers.

Against the backdrop of reports that cashew nuts from Africa and Tanzania are being imported in Goa and other parts of the country and later exported, Velip said, “What is seen in the Goan market is that kernel from outside the State is sold in the State in the name of Goa cashew. It is not authentic. This should be discontinued and we have to all ensure that only the authentic cashew of Goa reaches the consumer,” he said.

Velip recalled that the Board had initiated a survey to find out how many outlets are selling finished kernel, and whether they are authentic Goan.
