PANAJI
Pope has appointed Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, president of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), as one of the members of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication, the Vatican body responsible for overseeing the Church’s global communication efforts.
Cardinal Ferrão also serves as the President of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC), placing him among the most prominent Catholic leaders in India and across Asia. His appointment reflects the growing representation of the Indian Church in the universal Church’s leadership structures.
The Dicastery for Communication plays a central role in shaping the Vatican’s media presence, including news, digital platforms, and public engagement. Cardinal Ferrão’s inclusion is expected to bring valuable pastoral and regional insights, particularly from the Asian context, into the Church’s global communication strategy.
This development is seen as a significant moment for the Catholic community in India, highlighting the increasing contribution of Indian Church leaders at the Vatican level. It also underscores the importance of effective communication in advancing the Church’s mission in today’s digital age.
Cardinal Ferrão’s new role adds to his existing responsibilities and is likely to further strengthen the voice of the Indian and Asian Church in global ecclesial conversations.
