A car allegedly driven under the influence of alcohol rammed into an108 ambulance carrying three newborns, their mothers and a caretaker on the highway at Verna on Thursday night.
While the women and the newborns escaped unhurt, the ambulance caretaker, Rehana Sadedar (48), a native of Maharashtra but residing in Quepem, sustained injuries in the impact. The accident occurred at around 9.20 pm near the True Value showroom when a car driven by Zenobia Zora Chacko (33) of Chapel Bhat, Chicalim, proceeding from Margao towards Panaji, crashed into the ambulance.
On reaching the Verna stretch, the driver allegedly lost control, veered onto the opposite lane, and crashed head-on into the oncoming 108 ambulance, which was transporting the newborns. Police said the accused was driving in a rash and negligent manner and was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
A case has been registered at Verna Police Station under sections 281, 125, 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act. ASI Sudhakar Jadhav of Verna Police Station is investigating the case under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
Babies safe at SGDH
MARGAO: Medical Superintendent of the Hospicio South Goa District Hospital, Dr Rajendra Borkar, has confirmed that all three newborn babies involved in an ambulance accident are safe and in stable condition.
“All three babies are safe and healthy,” Dr Borkar stated. He further explained that such transfers are part of routine medical protocol. “It is a normal practice followed by GMC and Hospicio. Whenever there is a high patient load at the GMC, newborns are shifted to the district hospital to ensure they receive proper care and attention,” he said.
