The issue of water hyacinth took the centre stage at the gram sabha meeting of the coastal panchayat of Cavelossim on Sunday.

The issue of High Court order on constructions in road widening areas and in government acquired properties also figured at the meeting chaired by Sarpanch Dixon Vaz.

With tons of water hyacinth, washed away from river Sal at Margao, has invaded the Cavelossim-Mobor beach belt in the last couple of days, members demanded intervention by the government authorities, including the district Disaster Management Authority to handle the menace.

Sarpanch Dixon Vaz informed that the Panchayat will write to the district Collector to convene a meeting of the concerned MLAs, besides the panchayat bodies to resolve the issue of water hyacinth permanently.

The Sarpanch further informed that though an agency had deployed men and machinery to lift away the weed from the shore, he said the work has not kept pace with the situation.

The panchayat has further informed the gram sabha that it will take the issues of re-survey of fishermen houses with the government to allow permissions or regularisation of existing houses.

When the issue of the High Court order on illegal constructions came up for discussion, the Sarpanch informed that the Panchayat will write to the authorities to find out if the PWD have acquired the Benaulim to Mobor road with owners claiming that they have not got any compensation or did not receive any notice from PWD.

The Sarpanch highlighted the achievements of the Panchayat body in the last two and half years and expressed happiness that the panchayat revenue has gone up despite spending on various developmental works. He assured that the work of de-silting of water ways on both sides river Sal and Arabian Sea will be his top priority to prevent flooding.
