PANAJI: The Goa government has announced the setting up of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Digital Museum at Farmagudi, Ponda, a Rs 125.59 crore cultural project aimed at digitally reviving the life and legacy of the Maratha king.

Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, addressing a press conference today, said the Centre has sanctioned Rs 97.46 crore for the project, while the State will contribute the remaining Rs 28.13 crore.

“This will be a transformative project for Goa’s tourism and heritage landscape,” Khaunte said, adding that the museum is targeted for completion by March–April 2026. The museum will cover 29,212 sq metres, including the area around the historic fort.

Describing it as a modern tribute to one of India’s greatest historical figures, Khaunte said the digital museum aims to educate, inspire, and instil patriotic pride through innovative technology.

The immersive experience will include augmented reality rooms, holographic installations, virtual reality exhibits, 5D theatre experiences, and interactive storytelling zones. “Technology will allow us to tell Shivaji Maharaj’s story in a way that resonates with all age groups, especially the youth,” he said.

The museum will also feature a war costume gallery, a boat gallery, and a replica of the Saptakoteshwar Stambh, honouring Shivaji’s maritime and spiritual legacies. Supporting infrastructure such as yoga pavilions, horse trails, cafes, souvenir shops, and a light-and-sound show is also planned.

“This is about building a destination that offers not just education but a wholesome cultural experience,” Khaunte said.

He stressed that accessibility and inclusivity are central to the plan, with the museum designed to be disability-friendly and equipped with amenities like large coach parking, restrooms, and visitor facilities.

Khaunte added that the project is in line with Goa’s push for regenerative tourism, rooted in society, economy, environment, and culture. “We’re moving beyond the idea of just sun and sand. This project adds depth and identity to Goa’s tourism portfolio,” he said.

The PWD has already floated tenders worth Rs 64.91 crore, including 18% GST, and a conceptual video of the project has been presented. “This is not just a dream on paper. Execution is already underway with timelines monitored under central project guidelines,” Khaunte stated.

The content of the museum will be curated with the involvement of historians, scholars, and local experts. “We want this to be historically rigorous and engaging for both tourists and researchers,” he said.

Khaunte also said the museum will serve as a focal point for future Shiv Jayanti celebrations, turning into a vibrant cultural hub. “This will be a living museum, evolving with stories, voices, and celebrations year after year,” he said.
