MARGAO
If one came across inundated roads at many places in the commercial capital during the pre-monsoon showers last month, attribute it to the choked drains.

For many a drain was not de-silted by the authorities, with officials attributing the delay to the early rains this year.

Welcome to the Margao Municipal square area, where pedestrians as well as motorists came across mounds of silt removed from the drain in front of the Molio Pharmacy on Monday. As many as three mounds of silt and waste lifted out from the drains drew the attention of the citizens and pedestrians as the situation only indicated that the drains were not de-silted before the onset of monsoons.

Margao civic chief Damu Shirodkar informed that the civic body provides workers for the drain cleaning work as part of routine work. He, however, said that the Municipality has made available a special squad to clear up the stormwater drain in front of the Molio Pharmacy and Hotel Kohinoor to ensure there is no obstruction to water flow during the monsoons. “Last year, I had made available a squad of workers to clean up the drain. This year too, the Municipality has cleared the silt from the drain as part of the monsoon preparedness,” he added.
