Tensions broke out in Ekta Nagar, Mapusa, on Sunday after members of the Muslim community accused a local woman from the majority community of repeatedly harassing them and damaging decorations put up for their Id celebrations.
According to residents, the woman has allegedly been disrupting their religious events every year by playing loud music, using abusive language and interfering with community functions.
Matters escalated this year when she reportedly hurled obscene abuses at women from the minority community, sparking outrage.
Large groups from both the minority and majority communities gathered near the residential site, leading to a tense standoff.
Police rushed to the spot to prevent further escalation.
The woman was detained by Mapusa police and taken to the police station for questioning.
Soon after, a sizable crowd from the minority community assembled outside the police station, demanding strict action against her.
Police maintained order with additional deployment, and the situation was brought under control by late evening.
The accused woman was later released after being issued a stern warning.
