PANAJI
Ponda police on Saturday arrested a contractual government employee from Marcel for allegedly running a fake job racket in which three aspirants were cheated of nearly Rs 18 lakh.
The police said the accused, identified as Suhana Naik, allegedly promised jobs in government departments, offering posts such as clerk, driver and even a homeopathic doctor in return for money.
Complaints against the 39-year-old Marcel resident were registered on May 7 after the victims lodged official complaints claiming they had paid substantial amounts over assurances of government employment.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Shivram Vaigankar said the accused was herself employed on a contract basis.
After the arrest, she was produced before the court, which granted six days of police custody to facilitate further investigation into the alleged fraud.
Police suspect more victims could surface as the probe progresses amid comparisons to the earlier jobs-for-cash scam against Pooja Naik.
