The mixed green waste was engulfed by a fire at Sonsodo on Thursday.

The Sonsodo waste dumping site was back in the news in the early hours of Wednesday after garden and vegetable waste dumped at the complex was engulfed in a major fire.
The fire, which was reported around 1 am, once again brought to the forefront the contentious question over the MMC’s failure to resolve the problem of vegetable and green waste generated in the city.
For want of an effective mechanism to dispose of the tons of green waste generated in the city, the MMC collects the waste from the city and disposes of it along the roadside at Sonsodo.
How the waste dump along the roadside caught fire is again a mystery, but sources admitted that the civic body cannot escape the blame for its inability to work out an effective mechanism to dispose of the green waste.
In the past, suspicions had been raised that arson was the reason behind the fire that burnt the green waste dumped at Sonsodo. Similar suspicions were raised on Thursday as well, given that an attempt was made to dispose of the waste by burning, as the site is not under the surveillance of CCTV cameras.
Fire personnel battled the fire for around an hour and a half and managed to bring it under control at around 2.30 am on Thursday.
