Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane, who also holds additional charge of Urban Development, will launch Phase I of the dense tree plantation drive at the Sonsodo waste management site on World Environment Day as part of the Urban Forest scheme.
An invitation sent to the guests stated that the initiative is part of an exercise to transform a legacy dump site into a thriving green space.
Though Margao Municipal officials and citizens alike had raised many eyebrows over the Urban Forestry scheme at Sonsodo, given that the legacy dump was cleared by the government to set up a waste management plant, it was later clarified that trees will be planted at Sonsodo only at the periphery of the dumping site, leaving space for the proposed waste management plant.
