Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Monday announced that the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) will soon be undertaking heart and lung transplants in collaboration with specialized hospitals.
In his social media post, Rane said that GMC is equipped to carry out kidney and liver transplants at the moment, with preparations underway for heat and lung transplants in collaboration with specialized hospitals.
“We are strengthening our infrastructure to support the lifesaving movement,” he said.
The Minister informed that under the State Organ Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO), GMC has been able to facilitate eight organ donations, giving 29 individuals a renewed lease of life. The first organ donation took place in December 2020.
Rane said that one donor can save up to eight lives and one tissue donor can heal up to 75 others.
“From kidneys to hearts and livers, each transplant is a powerful reminder of what compassion, coordination and medical excellence can achieve,” he said while expressing gratitude to the donor families.
Rane said that Goa is shaping people-first, responsive mode of care, by streamlining protocols for brain death certification, enabling timely organ retrieval and building public awareness.
