In a comprehensive inspection drive conducted across Anjuna, Mapusa, and nearby areas, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), North Goa, intensified its surveillance on food businesses to ensure strict compliance with food safety and hygiene standards.
The initiative led to the inspection of 12 food premises, with decisive action taken against several violators.
As part of the drive, two food establishments — a fast-food outlet near Assagao Junction named Indian Momos, and a Hyderabadi Dum Biryani eatery — were ordered to shut down operations due to serious non-compliance with safety regulations.
Additionally, Janta Ice Factory, which was found operating without a valid FDA license, was instructed to suspend operations immediately until proper documentation and compliance are ensured.
All other food businesses inspected during the operation were issued formal improvement notices, mandating corrective action within a stipulated time-frame.
A special surveillance visit was also carried out at Alankar, a popular food hub in Mapusa, to monitor hygiene practices more closely.
While many premises were found to be taking proactive steps to meet FDA norms, two establishments — Ms Zaiqua and Ms Bobby Fast Food — were caught flouting essential food safety protocols.
Both premises were penalised under Section 69 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Ms Zaiqua was fined ₹10,000 and Ms Bobby Fast Food received a fine of ₹8,000.
The penalties were imposed by Richard Noronha, Designated Officer for North Goa, who is spearheading the FDA’s current enforcement efforts in the region.
The inspection team included FDA officials Rajaram Patil, Amit Mandrekar, Nousin Mulla and Sneha Gaude, all operating under the guidance of FDA Director Shweta Dessai.
Speaking on the occasion, Noronha reiterated the FDA's commitment to public health and food safety.
"The goal of these inspections is not merely punitive but to encourage establishments to upgrade their hygiene standards and ensure the well-being of consumers. We will continue to maintain strict vigilance in the interest of public safety," he said.
The FDA has urged all food business operators in Goa to ensure that their establishments are fully compliant with the Food Safety and Standards Act and associated regulations.
