As maximum temperatures continued to hover around 36°C on Saturday, brief spells of rain swept through parts of Goa, including urban areas, offering residents some respite from the lingering heat and humidity by early evening.

Despite the early temperature around 36°C -- also recorded during the week -- the “feels like” temperature climbed to 47.1°C.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD-Goa) had forecast hot and humid weather during the late morning hours in isolated pockets of the State, along with the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph later in the day.

The IMD said light to moderate rainfall and thundershowers were likely to continue in parts of Goa during the late afternoon and evening hours over the weekend, even as humid conditions would remain through the day.

The State also recorded a relatively high minimum temperature of 27.4°C. The IMD has already alerted that minimum temperatures are likely to be above-normal (+1.6 to +3.0°C) over parts of the west coast of India, while near-normal weekly minimum temperatures are likely over the rest of the country.

“The trough now runs from the above upper air cyclonic circulation over East Rajasthan to East Jharkhand across Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh at 0.9 km above mean sea level. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep off the Kerala coast and extends upto 1.5 km above mean sea level,” it said, explaining the prevailing weather system.
