Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) MLA Viresh Borkar has written to the Election Commission of India (ECI) seeking clarity on whether the model code of conduct imposed in view of the Ponda by-elections applies to proceedings of the Goa Legislative Assembly, which was cut short by seven days.

In the official letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, the St Andre MLA also questioned whether the Commission had directed the curtailment of the session.

The development comes after the Budget session of the State Legislative Assembly, which was commenced on March 6 and was originally scheduled to continue till March 27, was cut short midway. The move effectively reduced the 14-day session to just seven days.

The abrupt truncation has left a significant amount of legislative business pending. This includes 79 demands for grants amounting to approximately Rs 23,000 crore, over 2,100 unstarred questions, and more than 500 starred questions that were slated for discussion during the remaining days of the session.

The opposition MLAs had raised strong objections to the session curtailment, calling it a murder of democracy.
