Barely hours before he was due to leave for his native place in Bihar, a security guard was killed after being crushed under a speeding truck near the Dabolim Airport junction at Chicalim on Monday evening.
According to sources, Hare Krishna Roy, a native of Bihar but working and residing at Panaji, had travelled to Vasco to meet a group of acquaintances who were supposed to accompany him on a train journey back to his native village in Bihar later in the day.
The accident occurred while he was crossing the road near the airport.
Eyewitnesses said the truck, which was reportedly speeding from the port side towards Verna, struck Roy and dragged him for several metres, resulting in his death on the spot.
The driver attempted to flee the scene with the truck but was intercepted by locals at Dabolim and later handed over to the police.
Vasco police went to the site and registered a case. Further investigation is underway.
