Claim mini-dam will submerge plantations, affect houses along banks

SANGUEM
The gramsabha of Sanvordem Village Panchayat held today had some heated discussion over the construction of proposed bhandara at Mirabag Sanvordem across Zuari River, the fish market at Sanvordem junction and the inordinate delay caused in the construction of a bus shed at Dhadem Sanvordem which had collapsed two years ago.
The villagers residing at Mirabag while strongly opposing the construction of bhandara sought to know from the Panchayat authorities as to how the panchayat permitted the construction of the huge project in their ward without taking the villagers into confidence.
As the atmosphere remained tense, the panchayat body assured the villagers of writing to the Water Resources Department over the objections raised by them for the construction of bhandara. Sarpanch Chinmayi Naik also informed the villagers they were not aware of the cutting of mangroves in the area and the same will be notified to the WRD and immediate action will be taken to stop the same.
Villager Sumit Naik while raising the issue of the bhandara at the gram sabha claimed that the WRD in the name of the bhandara is in the processing of constructing a mini dam in the area which will spell doom for the villagers. Naik claimed that the project which is estimated to cost Rs 280 crore will not only cause submergence of agricultural plantations all along the river bank but a large number of villagers who have their residential houses along the river bank will be affected.
Local ward member Sanjay Naik also assured his ward member of the appropriate decision from the panchayat body against the Bhandara as per the discussions held at today's gram sabha.
The panchayat body was also taken to task by the gram sabha over its failure to construct the bus shed at Dhadem Samvordem which had collapsed some two years back. Village youth who had put up a temporary wooden shed at the Bus Shed gave invite to the panchayat body to come for inauguration of the temporary bus shed constructed by them after the gram sabha.
Heated discussion also prevailed over the functioning of fish market by the side of main road at Sanvordem junction.
The villagers called on the panchayat body to take appropriate measures to put things in place at the Fish Market and maintain cleanliness.
A police team remained present during the gram sabha to help prevent any untoward incident.
