Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday stated that Mormugao Port is on course to become India’s first green port under the Maritime India Vision 2030, with the newly commissioned 3 MW solar power plant. He said the Port will be entirely dependent on clean energy, reducing carbon emissions by 3,800 tonnes annually. Sawant also highlighted the newly inaugurated coal-handling dome, the largest in Goa, equipped with advanced dust control and fire safety systems.
“This is our answer to long-standing pollution concerns. The dome will eliminate coal-related pollution in the area,” he said, while addressing a function at the Mormugao Port.
Stating that Mormugao Port is one of the leading ports in the country, Sawant urged the Vice-President to extend employment opportunities available to local people on priority while developing the Port.
While endorsing the Centre’s modernisation agenda, the chief minister emphasised the importance of protecting local livelihoods. “We welcome development, but we must also ensure that the interests of workers are safeguarded. Many families rely on this port,” Sawant said.
Sawant added that Goa’s double engine government has propelled the State in witnessing infrastructural development in various sectors. “The newly dedicated projects will help boost economic growth enhancing the blue economy in the State and in the country at large,” he added.
