The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a possible flash flood warning for North Goa, forecasting continued heavy to very heavy rainfall across the State on Friday.
In its report issued on Thursday evening, the IMD flagged a low to moderate risk of flash floods in North Goa, as well as in Maharashtra’s Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, which share borders with Goa. Other parts of Maharashtra are also under similar risk.
“Surface runoff and inundation may occur in areas with fully saturated soils and low-lying regions over the area of concern due to rainfall over the next 24 hours,” the IMD stated.
With an Orange Alert in place for Friday, the capital city of Panaji and surrounding areas are likely to receive intense spells of rain. The department has also warned of possible landslides, rockslides and/or mudslides in hilly areas, along with risks to old or poorly maintained buildings.
Besides additional concern of possibility of flash floods coinciding with high tide, gusty winds are also expected.
IMD Goa has urged people in vulnerable areas to remain alert and take necessary precautions. The state is expected to experience increasing rainfall over the next seven days.
