MAPUSA

Condemning the brutal attack on an advocate of Mapusa by men in uniform, the North Goa District Advocates Association (NGDAA) on Friday demanded immediate registration of FIR against the perpetrators of the crime and suspension of the police involved in the dastardly attack.
The advocates’ association has also demanded an independent inquiry by an officer of not less than a senior police inspector in the most reprehensible attack against their fraternity.
“The high-handedness exhibited by the men in khaki against a lawyer to brutally assault him is a sheer case of abuse of power by people who are required to protect and ensure the safety of common men,” said Jerry Santamaria, Secretary of NGDDA.
He further said that the Director of General of Police (DGP) should immediately order a thorough enquiry into the incident to establish as to whose behest the police behaved like goons to forcefully dispossess somebody from his flat.
On Thursday, Advocate Gajanan Sawant of Mapusa was allegedly assaulted by policemen of Porvorim Police Station wherein the advocate suffered grievous injuries on his skull and also fractured his jaw. Advocate Sawant was admitted in GMC Hospital, Bambolim.
NGDDA President Paresh Rao informed that besides demanding registration of FIR and suspension of police officials involved in the attack, the advocates also demanded suspension and departmental inquiry against the Police Inspector of Porvorim Police Station and others involved in the attack.
“We want time-bound inquiry and speedy investigation and filing of chargesheet in the matter. The inquiry should also look into the charge of how the constables were interfering in an apparently civil dispute,” Rao said.
He said if the authorities fail to take action, then the advocates will approach the High Court of Bombay at Goa to get their grievances resolved.
The advocates also plan to meet the DGP and approach the home department with their complaint against the police officials involved in the attack.
