Villagers reject smart meter installation

Demand for a study on the village carrying capacity and opposition to villas with swimming pools took centre stage at the gram sabha of the Nuvem village panchayat held on Sunday.
At the gram sabha Chaired by Sarpanch Freda D’Sa, members also opposed any move by the electricity department to replace old meters with smart meter, with members saying that if smart meters are fixed without the consent of consumers, the same should be removed and replaced with a regular meter.
The demanded that the Power department check why smart meters are rolled back in other states in the country.
On the issue of village carrying capacity, gram sabha Jose Roque Andrade pointed out that Nuvem gram Sabha was one of the first village to raise the issue on carrying capacity. He recalled that the Sarpanch had given an assurance during the gram sabha, but still the carrying capacity study of the village has not taken place with respect to availability land and other infrastructures considering environment and ecology of the village.
The Sarpanch assured that the issue will be discussed at the panchayat body meeting and the carrying capacity study will be started after obtaining administrative approval.
The gram sabha also witnessed discussion on a project approved by Panchayat comprising of eight villas and swimming polls.
As part of the discussion, a gram sabha member raised issue of a project comprising of villas with a swimming pool.
The member reminded the Sarpanch, Secretary and other panch members about the resolution on carrying capacity which was unanimously approved in the gram sabha, stating that multi-dwelling housing/Flats and swimming pools should not be allowed/licence given by the panchayat, till the carrying capacity is decided.
Gram sabha members demanded that the panchayat stop approving structures/homes with swimming pools. Gram sabha member Amacio Fernandes also requested for the audit for existing swimming pools in Nuvem village.
