Over 10k youth to be trained under 'apprentice' scheme

In a bid to make Goa's young human resource employable, the State government is hoping to train over 10,000 youth through its ambitious apprenticeship programme which will be launched by handing out joining letters on July 15.

All of the State's 82 government establishments, including departments, and an additional 400-odd private companies have already come on board for the apprenticeship programme, according to S S Gaonkar, the new Director of the Department of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.

Gaonkar, who addressed the media on Friday, said job-seekers will have to first register themselves for this fixed term apprentice training programme on the national portal https://www.apprenticeshipindia.gov.in.

On this portal, they will have to search and apply for an appropriate apprenticeship opportunity of their choice, he said, adding that they hope have nearly 10,000 apprentice trainees on board by July 15.

Of these, 5,000 will be in the government sector and the balance 5,000 in the 400-odd private companies. Joining letters to these 10,000 will be handed over on July 15, which is observed as World Youth Skills Day, he said. 

The initiative which is aimed at improving the employability quotient of the young human resource of the State, will also entail payment of a stipend during the fixed-tenure programme which will extend up to one year.

Gaonkar said, stipends of between Rs 8,000 and Rs 13,000 will be paid based on the individual's educational qualification.

Trainees with a qualifications up to SSC (Class X) will be paid Rs 8,000 monthly, while those with ITI qualifications and HSSC (Class XII) will get paid Rs 12,000 per month. Those with graduation in any stream will be paid Rs 13,000, he added.

At the end of the one-year programme, apprenticeship completion certificates will be issued to them by the government which will be considered as valid experience certificates for government jobs, Gaonkar said. 

He said, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant will interact with youth virtually on Saturday at 10.30 am to discuss the programme and youth will also be able to connect with 'Swayampurna Mitras' who will be available at all panchayats and civic bodies across the State.
