The Department of Fisheries has swung into action contemplating a crackdown on unlicensed mechanised fishing vessels with concerned officers pulled up for alleged laxity. The authorities are exploring the possibility of deregistering boats that continue to operate without valid licences.

Government sources told The Goan that Director of Fisheries Shamila Monteiro has asked Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents posted at various jetties to explain why licences were not issued to about 600 fishing vessels.

“Monteiro has directed senior officers to ensure compliance before the new fishing season begins in August. They are asked to reply why licences were not issued... Deputy Directors have also been asked to explore the option of deregistering vessels found operating without licenses,” the source said, confirming the development follows The Goan’s report on June 14.

An internal directive issued by her predecessor, IAS officer Yashaswini B, on April 30 and marked ‘Most Urgent’ had noted that only 292 fishing vessel licences had been issued for the 2025 season across four jetties, while 658 transponders – used for vessel tracking – had been installed.

All Superintendents were thereafter instructed to initiate the process of issuing show-cause notices to boat owners who failed to renew their licences and submit a consolidated report by May 5. However, it is reliably learnt that several boat owners did not respond to the notices, resulting in delays by Superintendents who reportedly held back their submissions to the department.

Sources further stated that vessels operating without maintaining crew records will also be taken to task. As per records, no penalties have been imposed on violators since 2014 as there is no law to penalize them.
