In yet another case of illegal sand mining, the Ponda police have registered an offence against unknown person/s for exploiting the State resources without permission or clearance from the government.
As per the FIR, Assistant Geologist with the Directorate of Mines & Geology Omkar Naik alleged that an unknown person illegally extracted river sand and gravel sand of about 100m3, all worth Rs 1.30 lakh, from the sand bar by digging out numerous pits near the Mhadei river bank. The accused did not obtain any permission or lease and license from the competent authority to carry out the activity,” he said.
While the accused is yet to be identified, the Ponda police have registered the offence under section 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 22 and 04 (1) of the MMDR Act and confiscated the materials from the site.
