Ramesh Tawadkar resigns as Speaker, to be sworn in as Minister today

PANAJI: Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly and Canacona MLA, Ramesh Tawadkar, resigned from his post this morning ahead of his induction into the Pramod Sawant-led cabinet.

Tawadkar submitted his resignation letter to State Legislature Secretary Namrata Ulman at the Assembly complex. He will be sworn in as Minister at Raj Bhavan at 12 pm, alongside former Chief Minister and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat.

Speaking after his resignation, Tawadkar said, “I had expected to complete my full tenure as Speaker, but the party has decided to induct me into the Cabinet, entrusting me with this responsibility while keeping in view the 2027 Assembly elections.”

Tawadkar, first elected to the Assembly in 2007, has earlier served as a minister in BJP governments, handling portfolios such as sports, tribal welfare and agriculture. He was elected as Speaker in March 2022, soon after the BJP’s victory in the State polls.
