It was Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar, who sought the details on the progress of the new museum building in Goa.

CM Pramod Sawant shared a detailed report consisting of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the new museum building which has been submitted to the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. This submission, made on March 20, 2024, is intended to secure financial support under the "Museum Grant Scheme."

The new "Goa State Museum" will be situated at Ella Old Goa. The site, which spans 9,520 square metres, was transferred from the Agriculture Department to the Museum Department to facilitate the construction.

As of July 11, 2024, the tender for the construction of the new museum has not yet been issued. This process is expected to commence once the necessary approvals and funding are finalized.

Funding for the new museum will be sourced from both central and state governments. The DPR has been sent to the Ministry of Culture to obtain central funds, and the State Government has allocated ₹10 crore under capital expenditure for the project.

Regarding support for private museums, the Directorate of Museums previously offered financial assistance through a grant scheme, which has now been discontinued. Grants were provided to several private museums under this scheme, including:

Houses of Goa, Salvador-do-Mundo - ₹7.46 lakhs (2017); Goa Chakra Museum, Benaulim - ₹25.00 lakhs (2018); Ancestral Goa Museum, Loutolim - ₹9.95 lakhs (2018) and Pilar Seminary Museum, Pilar - ₹10.00 lakhs (2018)

The Directorate is working on a new policy to support private museums in the state.
