Revenue Minister Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate on Monday informed the State Legislative Assembly that the proposal to create Goa’s third district is still in its initial stages and that no decision has been taken yet regarding the location of its headquarters.
“Nothing to worry. We have not taken any decision on where to host the headquarters of the third district since it is in a very nascent stage,” Monserrate said, addressing concerns raised during Zero Hour.
Congress MLA Altone D’Costa had earlier raised the issue, stating that there were growing apprehensions among the people of Quepem over rumours that Curchorem would be named the district headquarters. He urged the government to clarify its position.
“The people of Quepem strongly demand that the district headquarters be established in Quepem town, instead of Curchorem. I urge the government to address these concerns and provide clarity,” D’Costa said.
Curchorem MLA and former minister Nilesh Cabral clarified that he had only welcomed the creation of the third district and proposed Curchorem as a possible location for the headquarters.
The proposed third district is expected to include the talukas of Quepem, Sanguem, Canacona, and Dharbandora.
While the proposal has generated interest, the government reiterated that discussions are at a preliminary stage, and no final decisions have been taken.
