The BJP will retain its hold over the South Goa Zilla Panchayat as party Sancoale Zilla Panchayat member Anita Thorat is all set to be elected as the Chairperson of the South district Panchayat body.

On the last day of filing nomination papers for the vacant post, the Chief Executive Officer of the South ZP, Florina Colaco, received Anita Thorat’s lone nomination paper for the post. The election for the post of South ZP Chairperson, which is now slated for Monday, will be a mere formality since the Presiding Officer has received only the lone nomination form from Anita Thorat.

Suspense over the BJP’s candidate for the post of South ZP Chairperson, left vacant by the resignation of outgoing ZP Chief Sanjana Velip, ended on Friday morning when the BJP ZP members went into a huddle with party leaders comprising former MPs Narendra Sawaikar and Vinay Tendulkar at the BJP office.

At the meeting, the top BJP leaders announced Anita Thorat’s name as the party candidate to contest the election for the vacant post of ZP Chairperson. After Thorat’s name was unveiled before the members, she, along with a couple of members, headed to the office of the South Goa district ZP to file her nomination papers before ZP CEO Florina Colaco.

Colaco later told the media that she received the lone nomination paper from Anita Thorat during the timeframe set for the filing of nomination papers.

Given that Anita Thorat’s election as the new South Goa ZP Chairperson is now a foregone conclusion, the Sancoale ZP member will remain in the saddle for a short period of 3-4 months before the Zilla Panchayats head to elections around November-December this year.
