Growing concern over the recent spate of gang wars in the State echoed at the Tivim gram sabha, with villagers demanding that the police step up patrolling in the village at least three times a day.

Local resident Subodh Kerkar said the presence of a large migrant population in Cansa, Dhanva and Maddel areas has raised anxiety among locals.

“Gang wars are being reported in the State. We need to be alert. We want the police to patrol Cansa, Dhanva and Maddel three times a day because of the large number of migrants staying there,” Kerkar urged.

He added that many of these migrants gather in large groups in the morning before heading to Calangute and Mapusa to work at construction sites and as daily-wage labourers.

Sarpanch Michael Fernandes assured villagers that the panchayat would write to the police, as resolved in the meeting.

Meanwhile, sewage overflow from an allegedly illegal septic tank built by the roadside at Maddel also drew the ire of residents.

Martha Noronha complained that sewage water often seeps onto the road near St Rock chapel, creating health and safety concerns. Kerkar too supported the demand for immediate action. Fernandes informed that the matter had already been referred to the mamlatdar.

Former panch member Robert Colaco raised the issue of road alignment and widening plans which, he reminded, had been pending with the PWD despite repeated requests in previous gram sabhas.

The sarpanch assured that a reminder would be sent and added that both the engineer and contractor would be called for the upcoming board meeting on September 4 to discuss the Tivim playground issue.

Colaco further expressed disappointment that Tivim was left out of the distribution of plant saplings, carried out by the local MLA in other villages of the constituency.
