Short-term drive to target 10 major offences; cops to use body-worn cameras

In yet another crackdown on traffic violations, the Traffic Police launched a special drive on Thursday targeting 10 major offences with the mandatory use of body-worn cameras by personnel on the ground.
The drive, which will continue till February 16, covering the weekend, is to curb violations such as riding/driving without a licence, underage riding/driving, helmetless riding, not wearing a seatbelt, carrying excess pillion riders, inebriated riding/driving, using a mobile phone while riding/driving, overspeeding, modified silencers and renting out private vehicles.
In a wireless message sent to all traffic units, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Prabodh Shirvoikar stated that the initiative is to prevent road accidents.
“Maximum deployment should be ensured for a deterrent effect, and as many cases as possible should be booked during the drive. Body-worn cameras must be used to capture video recordings, which should be reflected in the DSR without fail,” it stated.
It further instructed in-charges to remain on the field to book the cases while Deputy Superintendents of Police across the two districts have been tasked with monitoring the drive.
